Fred Bevis

Although his father and uncle were active sailors in Melbourne back in their day, it was a move to Sydney by young Fred that was the catalyst for his long commitments to the sport and the SASC.

Having joined in 1977, he was our 39th Commodore (1995-98) and Honorary Treasurer for almost 20 years, making sustained contributions to the stable administration and financial well-being of the club across several decades. He also served with both Yachting NSW and Australian Sailing, and on the Australia Day Regatta committee.

Fred’s warm, good-humoured persona also belied a fierce determination to be first across the Amateurs finish line at the helm of his yachts Brigadoon (A145) and Warana (A37).

This competitive streak twice yielded him the Kelly Cup (2009, 2018), 6 season Gold Medals and multiple Australia Day wins.

Another club ‘honour’ associated with him, the ‘T-Bone Trophy’ (1984), has not been awarded since!

But for Fred, his late wife Beverley and their boys James and Peter, sailing was also a family affair; one that’s been rekindled by the purchase of Colleen III (A37), now being campaigned by father and sons.
