Our Club

The Sydney Amateur Sailing Club (SASC), founded in 1872, has a proud history that remains strong today. Tucked away in Mosman Bay, our Club House has direct access to the water, and offers a welcoming environment for all.

With dedicated volunteers and a lively social calendar, SASC continues to connect people who share a passion for sailing. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or just beginning, SASC offers opportunities to learn, race, a great place to meet people and become involved in the community.

Welcome to the Amateurs, a club as unique for its charm and character as it is for its beautiful location on the shore of Mosman Bay.  Ours is a club made up of people of every skill level and yachts of almost every age, type and size.

Our historic clubhouse on Mosman Bay says everything about the spirit of the Amateurs. It’s the home of post-race celebrations, social functions, working bees and a professional slipway that allows you to access expert shipwrights or carry out your own maintenance. Most of all it’s a place where you can meet fellow sailors and crew, where people can learn from each other and swap stories about all things on and off the water.

The SASC also offers a variety of storage options, club-serviced moorings in Mosman Bay, and a tender service operating on weekends and during Friday twilights.

At the Heart of SASC

At the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club (SASC) is the love of sailing and boats but we also make sure there are additional social events like trivia nights and seasonal celebrations, weekday activities which also include yoga sessions with professional instructors. The beautiful grass area, right by the water, is ideal for picnics, offering a relaxing spot to enjoy a peaceful afternoon with fellow members or family.

The Friday Twilight races remain a highlight, with the post-race BBQ and prize-giving creating a wonderful atmosphere of camaraderie. Members can also enjoy live music, singing and special events like Gaffers Day, which bring the community closer together.

Informative talks are frequently held, offering members a chance to learn more about sailing and maritime history. And with the club’s friendly, welcoming atmosphere, everyone – whether seasoned sailors or newcomers – feels right at home. The SASC provides a place where people of all ages can connect, relax and make memories by the water. With so many activities available, there’s always something happening, ensuring that SASC is more than just a sailing club, where everyone is welcome.

Special Interest Groups

At the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club (SASC), our community is as diverse as our activities. Alongside our sailing events, we offer a range of social and recreational opportunities for members.  The SASC social calendar is filled with special events, from lively trivia nights to our Summer and Winter Solstice celebrations, where members come together to enjoy music, food and the unique harbour atmosphere.

Our Water Women organise a range of activities in a safe and friendly environment, including sailing rallies that encourage women to engage in sailing in a fun, supportive environment, no matter their experience level. In addition to the excitement on the water, we host yoga classes for those looking to unwind and stay fit, with sessions held by a professional instructor in the club’s scenic waterfront setting. Our popular lunches bring together women members for a relaxed and enjoyable afternoon, offering a great way to socialise and build friendships within the club.

Our working bees provide members a chance to volunteer and help maintain our beloved facilities, contributing to the club’s strong sense of community. Our foodies refresh our selections of food and beverages.

With over 150 years of history, SASC proudly preserves its past through extensive archives, while continuing to offer a welcoming and vibrant environment for members today.

Volunteers

The spirit of camaraderie at the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club (SASC) is one of its most defining qualities. Volunteering is a proud tradition that brings members together, reinforcing the shared sense of responsibility for maintaining the club. Every year, SASC hosts working bees where members roll up their sleeves and tackle various projects to keep the facilities in top shape for everyone to enjoy.

These events go beyond mere maintenance – they strengthen the bonds within the community. Whether it’s repainting, repairing deck planks, or constructing a new pathway, every task is a collaborative effort. Members from all walks of life contribute their skills, from professional electricians to hands-on DIYers, ensuring that the club runs smoothly and looks its best.

Even in the face of challenging weather, the esprit de corps within the club is unwavering. During a recent working bee, despite rain and postponements, over 65 dedicated volunteers turned out with enthusiasm to complete the essential work. Their collective determination and shared sense of purpose reflect the deep-rooted commitment to the club’s well-being. This resilient spirit ensures that the SASC community thrives, with members continuously coming together to preserve the club for everyone to enjoy.

Safety

The Sydney Amateur Sailing Club (SASC) places the highest priority on safety for everyone, including staff, members, visitors and guests. The club conducts regular safety audits and inspections across all its facilities, so that equipment, electrical tools and infrastructure are up to standard. For example, electrical tools are routinely tested and tagged, and key areas undergo necessary repairs to maintain safety and functionality.

SASC also takes great care in maintaining its general facilities, such as the clubhouse, Green Shed and vessels, so that they are safe and accessible for all. These areas undergo regular inspections to keep them in a safe condition. For members and visitors alike, whether using the docks, attending events, or simply enjoying the club’s amenities, safety is always a top consideration.

In terms of sailing, the skippers are briefed annually on maritime safety and brief their crews on safety protocols before setting sail. The club’s diligence in safety precautions means that everyone can enjoy their time at SASC, both on and off the water, with confidence.

Our Environment

At the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club (SASC), environmental responsibility is a core value. The club has implemented solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to reduce energy consumption and support sustainable operations. In compliance with environmental regulations, the slipway operations are carefully managed to minimise impact on the local ecosystem, with strict protocols in place for the handling of waste and runoff.

Additionally, SASC encourages waste sorting and removal, so that recyclable materials are separated and disposed of responsibly. These initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to protecting Sydney Harbour and maintaining an eco-friendly environment for future generations.
