The club’s longest-serving and oldest member when it celebrated its 150 th anniversary, Bill followed a family tradition sailing the classic gaff rigged Ranger (A1), designed and built by his father Cliff, an acclaimed Sydney sailor.
Joining the Amateurs in 1948, he took over the helm of Ranger when Cliff retired from racing at the end of the 1967 season.
Bill has been doyen of the Ranger class fleet racing at the SASC, a champion of Australian ‘gaffers’ and a widely-respected authority on sailing.
In 2006 these many contributions to the sport were recognised with an Order of Australia for his service to yachting.
