Tony, the club’s 40th Commodore (1998-2001), brought the experience and capabilities of senior business management to the SASC during a period when its financial situation seemed perilous.
Like many executives in the middle decades of the last century, his business career had required him to move home many times.
Tony sailed in Papua New Guinea and Melbourne before finally returning to Sydney. The Amateurs was a natural club for him to join in 1985 as he lived directly opposite in Mosman Bay.
As a Director and Honorary Treasurer his administrative and accounting talents helped put the club’s operations on a modern, efficient footing. He’s also been a long-time SASC volunteer, including serving on the race management team and as a tender driver.
Every club that is self-managed and principally relies on volunteers needs a solid realist to contain the more romantic or unrealistic ambitions of its members. Tony Clarkson has filled that role with quiet distinction.
He reflected on those years in this conversation with David Salter.
