One boat seeming to define the classic spirit of the Amateurs is Martin van der Wal’s beautiful timber gaffer Hoana (A100).
Still turning heads on Sydney Harbour a century after her launch, Hoana has long been a consistent performer around the buoys. And also a fine bluewater yacht, as she proved during a three-year circumnavigation in the 1960’s.
Martin, a multiple SASC season gold medallist and Life Member, maintains Hoana in top condition and has never stopped fine tuning her sailing qualities during a long and accomplished custodianship.
He joined the Amateurs in 1987, despite initial reluctance to do so based on his ‘Marxian’ view of clubs and club membership.
