When as many as a dozen SASC boats contested the annual Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race in the final decades of the 20 th century, prominent among the skippers flying the club burgee was passionate offshore sailor Jim Davern.
Jim, who passed away in November 2023, was best known ashore as the prolific producer, director and writer of some of Australia’s most loved television shows of their time, including A Country Practice, Bellbird and Rush. For these he won numerous media awards and national recognition in the Order of Australia.
After joining the club in 1977 he subsequently owned and helmed eight yachts from Mosman Bay, participated in numerous East Coast bluewater races, cruised extensively, and enjoyed the admiration and respect of both his devoted crews and their competition.
But Jim’s introduction to ocean racing was hardly smooth sailing.
