Charles Maclurcan
Since joining the Amateurs in 1978, Charles has done it all: harbour and ocean racing, yachting administration, and officiating at some of our foremost regattas.
Sailing has long been a constant in the Maclurcan family. Although his profession sometimes took him away from the sea, Charles rarely passed up an opportunity to race.
A straight shooter, our 41st Commodore (2001-2004) could always be relied upon to add some spice to any sailing situation.
A master of good-hearted mockery, his sharp wit and probing questions regularly challenged the sport’s frequent conservatism and conformity. His shipmates can also attest that, despite his small stature, he displayed impressive stamina at the helm during long offshore events.
In later years, Charles turned his considerable energy to race management and was an official starter at the sailing regattas of the 2000 Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games. For his exceptional contribution to the success of both events, including recruiting and training a large team of volunteers, he was later named Official of the Year by the NSW Sports Federation.
That experience also proved of significant benefit to our club, with Charles a regular volunteer aboard the SASC starter’s boat for many years thereafter.
He shared some reflections on his eventful sailing life with David Salter.
